SIMMSActive is our new recreational activity programme at St Mary's! The programme was made possible due to £152,000 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s University Sport Activation Fund. St Mary’s is one of 54 universities to benefit from nearly £10 million of funding to help get around 180,000 new students playing sport. St Mary’s University project, titled SIMMSActive, will complement the existing student sport programmes at St Mary’s. The initiative is a collaboration between Sport St Mary’s and the Students’ Union aimed at increasing regular student physical activity and participation. SIMMSActive will provide a wide range of weekly recreational activities that are affordable and flexible. The SIMMSActive programme is encourages all students to get more physically active and create a lifelong physical activity habit.
What is it?
SIMMSActive is St Mary's new initiative which offers weekly recreational activities aimed at getting you to be more physically active. Sessions will be student led, easy to access, informal and delivered in a variety of spaces across campus. In our first year we’ll have 11 activities on offer including Dodgeball, football, self-defence, touch rugby and Karate. We ‘ll add a further two activities in our second year, and in the third year three more!
How much will it cost?
You told us that you would prefer cheap and easy to access options based on a 'pay as you go' scheme and memberships. This has been reflected in our pricing structure:
*When purchased in conjunction with a student union club membership.
Can I get involved in more than one activity in the week?
Yes! All the activities will take place at varying times providing you with the flexibility to participate in as many sessions as possible!
When and where does it take place?
The weekly sessions will last one hour and will take place on campus throughout the week from September to June. A full timetable of activities will be on offer at the Enrolment Village, Freshers’ Fair, Clubs and Societies Evening, at the Sports Centre reception and in the Students' Union Shop & Hub.
Do I need to be part of a club or society to participate?
No, you do not need to currently participate in any sport or society to get involved with SIMMSActive, it is open to all St Mary's students including postgraduate and PHD students.
How do I get involved?
All you need to do is simply turn up to a session and get involved! All equipment will be provided and the session will be led by an activator.
Can I try a free session?
Yes, you can enjoy your first session absolutely free! All you need to do is register at reception in the Sports Centre.
Can I get involved with the programme to enhance my CV?
The SIMMSActive Co-ordinator will work with student activity leaders to develop a workforce of 'Champions' from the student body.
