Category: Students Union Petition
My petition is for all the Waldegrave houses have washing machines installed.
How many washers and dryers are there currently?
10 washing machines and 10 dryers (ish)
What’s the Issue?
The laundrette for many years has struggled to cope with the amount of washing from the 700 ish students who live on campus. This struggle is shown in the form of some or all washing machines being broken, busy or out of service. It is further demonstrated when students to wait very late to do washing as no machines are free to wash or dry. There are also issues with the drying not working completely. To be able to pay for the wash or dry there is an app. The app is called Circuit. All students have to download and register with app. For many international students this can be a struggle to get on board with, as their banking is not based in the UK.
Why Waldegrave?
For many students who choose to live in the Waldegrave houses the attraction to these gorgeous houses comes from the cheaper price for rent. Further there are many students who come from abroad who select this type of accommodation for just the semester and downloading the app would be pointless as they would have to contact their home bank.
These houses are traditionally built as a family home, which would accommodate a washing machine. The price of washing and drying at the laundrette is also relatively high and would be an adding to the amount they spend for those wishing to save money. Free Washing machines in the house would remove part of this cost.
Who could this change benefit?
This would benefit the students who want to wash or dry their clothes.
Campus as a whole! As the number of students needing to use the laundrette would be less.
Why this should be implemented?
With roughly 700 students on campus there is a strong argument that 10 washing machines and 10 dryers was never going to be enough for all of the students who live on St Marys campus. Let alone if any of them are out of service. There are 9 Waldegrave houses that make up St Marys halls. There is already a washing machine installed in Waldegrave 13. This shows that the houses are compatible with this change and that St Marys is already moving in this progressive way. While it may be difficult to have this change in other halls, there is certainly room and pipes for these houses.
Comments
I whole-heartedly agree. The Waldegrave houses can easily accommodate washer/dryers and it would ease some of the current demand on the Washeteria. And an app should not be required to carry out necessary chores.
